Well, finally time to write something down...
Wednesday 4th of June, Laurens, Thomas and myself arrived at the kart track in Berghem for a 100 lap endurance race. The race would consist of at least 3 driver swaps and a tank stop. We decided to do 3 30 laps stints and a last stint of 10 laps for the fastest driver.
In the ten minutes qualifying session we chose to give everyone a stint, to get the feeling for the kart before the race started. Both Laurens and I had traffic in our fast lap, so Thomas - who did the first laps on this track - had to set the grid time. He did a very nice 1:05.8 in his first lap, which put us on the 11th place (out of 38 ) on the grid (the laps that followed he also was held up by traffic).
Thomas wanted to start the race, so that's what happened
His start wasn't very good though, but he managed to make up for it in the following corners and crossed the line in 9th position after the first lap. Very soon it became clear to us that that would be the place we would have to fight for... the karts in front of us simply pulled away on the straights.. Thomas' cornering still made for some nice fast lap times, but maximum pushing just wasn't good enough to keep up with the seemingly much more powerful top 5 karts.
After Thomas had finished his stint - he had put a fastest time of 1:05.28 on the monitor - we were in 8th position. During Thomas' stint we had decided to let me do the second stint because it was threatening to start raining.. If it would start raining we figured it would be better to let Laurens drive, because he has more experience in racing in the rain than me.
So while it was still dry I jumped in for the second stint. During the stint there was some very light drizzle from time to time, causing some understeer.. but it was never enough to make it really hard
I had some nice fights with the number 31 and number 7, but again it was really hard to keep up on the straights, even when I was in the slipstream the gap only got bigger.. Nevertheless I managed to set two 1:04.708's in that stint. When I handed the kart over to Laurens we were in 3rd position!
Laurens then refueled the kart and started his stint in 6th position. He had a nice fight with kart number 4, but unfortunately for him it didn't start raining. He managed to climb up to the 4th position with a best laptime of 1:04.890.
This meant my lap time was the fastest and I was awarded to do the last 10 laps of the race. \o/ Started the stint in 6th and in the 3rd lap of I improved my lap time with 0.002s to 1:04.706! The stint was too short to improve positions though; final position 6th.
Looking at the fastest lap times of the top 10, I can easily conclude we were one of the better teams in that top 10. Our fastest lap time was the slowest by far, but consistency and speed brought us the 6th position.
So all in all it really was a nice race and a cool event, but it's a true shame that even the biggest retard would have won in the kart that now came first. I honestly don't think that much faster was possible in this kart. Laurens has done many laps on that track, with various karts so he really knows his way around. He said he was pushing his ass off with this kart, but it really didn't want to go much faster. The 1/10s difference between Laurens and me only confirms this.. that kart was on its max. Fortunately, looking at the race history of kart number 20 it was never faster than the times we did with it, so I guess that's a compliment for the three of us
Here's some action photo's of the event:

whoohoo nice results lads!
And yes, the issue with karts provided by 1 company definitely can cause the difference between being good, and being the best. |
